Monday, May 30 – today we celebrated our 30th wedding anniversary by going to the Nile Safari Lodge for dinner. It is a trip of about 35 kilometres from Buliisa, along roads that so well maintained (ok, I am kidding, they are not maintained at all). The corrugation effect of the dirt roads (sometimes barely tracks) make for a longer journey and one can arrive feeling like a malted milkshake emerging from the blender, but the scenery is simply picturesque and the villagers are very friendly. While taking our time and enjoying the journey we missed the turn off and became lost but we finally reached our destination via a rather circuitous route.
The resort is a beautiful place. It overlooks the Albert Nile – (the Nile has left Lake Albert and is continuing its journey towards Egypt). From the resorts vantage point we look across the Albert Nile to see Elephants grazing quietly at the waters edge at dusk. Hippos can be seen both in the water and on the banks enjoying the soft sweet grasses, and occasionally a dispute over territory erupts with a ‘much display about nothing’, all posturing and noise, but it is exciting to watch. Sometimes the huge crocodiles can been seen keeping their distances from the hippos. Many varieties of bird life, lizards, butterflies and other animals can be seen there as well, last time we saw a Shoebill close up.
We had a delightful candlelight dinner as the sun darkened its setting and the stars came out to twinkle and dance for us. It was a clear, mild, cloudless evening and the brilliance of the Milky Way shone above us punctuated by the odd ‘falling star or two’. Again, our God can only be admired and adored for the beauty He has woven into His creation for His children to appreciate and enjoy.
The journey home was was relatively uneventful, apart from the corrugations of the road, the odd Owl and Kite flying past, cows and goats sleeping on the road and in rather reluctant moods to move and allow us to pass all was peaceful until we were unable to find the home where we were staying. After some searching our destination was reached and sweetly we both slept the night away contented and happy, in preparation for the next 30 years.
