Otya nno (Hello)

This will be our last newsletter for a little while, as we are returning to Australia in a few weeks for an unknown period. Our daughter is getting married at the beginning of September and we also need to refill our empty bank balances so we can continue on with our adventure here in Uganda as soon as possible.

We have thoroughly enjoyed our last 18 months here and we would like to take this opportunity to praise our God for what He has accomplished through us and to us over the this period.

On the spiritual side, we have seen people saved, as well as many, many filled with the Holy Spirit. Many have also received prophetic words, encouragement, counselling and some have even been gloriously healed. We have enjoyed the privilege of ministering in many, many churches, crusades and seminars in the various parts of this country and we praise our God for all the good relationships that have been formed and are enduring – both with Ugandan pastors and community leaders and various white and European church people and others westerners who are in business here. There are countless opportunities to serve the church of Uganda and East Africa if more resources and personnel would avail themselves. We keep praying that God would open the eyes of some people to ‘see’ this land of opportunity here, to also come and either contribute in short term missionary ventures or live here like we do. Jesus will never return until we take the gospel to all nations or ethnic groupings, and Africa also needs to hear the living word of God . For more information on some of these events see http://musumbamike.wordpress.com

On the projects side, some small businesses have been commenced for pastors. These will continue and we look forward to starting some more as soon as we are able to do so. These projects are designed to help a church planting pastoral family start a small business and over time to assist them in developing and growing it so the family can provide a reasonable income for themselves. Some projects are – laundry, corner shop, goat breeding and crops.
We have been blessed to be a blessing and have also contributed to towards helping some churches get their own land and building.
The land God has blessed us with has now been paid for, and surveyed and ownership granted, and we are only awaiting the official Government title which will take another few months. A few days ago we bought an extra acre alongside the existing 20 acres and on that we are planning to eventually build our house there. Already we have put some crops in including bananas, mulberry (for fruit and silk) and coffee. We have also planted a variety of fruit trees and also some trees for harvesting hardwood timber in years to come. The funds raised from this will be put towards church planting and mission activities. In addition we have allowed 3 pastoral families to use a portion of our land to grow food for themselves until we return.
The goat herd is steadily growing and we are slowly clearing some areas in preparation for fish ponds and bee keeping.

Shirley and I are also involved in a village school that was commenced this year. We have been very excited to see some support from Australia come in for uniforms, equipment, text books etc. Most of these children live in such abject poverty, that it is so hard to personally imagine unless you see it for yourself. Many of these youngsters have either no parents or just one and they often only eat less than once a day – and then that meal is not up to our nutritional standards. So, we have a great opportunity to not only spiritually transform this village and beyond but to transform it through school and other forms of education. It is our desire to help educate the local people in better land management and production etc, as well as seeing the village community transformed spiritually as well.

To everyone who has helped us in our adventure, again we say thank you, we can not do it with out your prayers and support.

God Bless you all

A few weeks ago we went to a village church in Kamuli District about 150 kilometres north East of Kampala, past the source of the Nile, a beautiful sight at any time. The 150k’s took 4 hours to drive each way with half of it on a good quality road but the other half!, groans, sighs, grumbles!, was on a road that was built during Idi Amin’s time. We felt like we were driving on, (weaving really), through deep, dark and dangerous moon craters. The road had been patched only to be re patched and re patched again and again. In some places the holes were so wide and deep it was a challenge to the driving skills. On our return journey home, we encountered a very fierce storm/squall and as a consequence these moon craters were filled with water and in the dark of night……..what a nightmare that drive was, how the suspension survived the trip was a miracle.

The church we visited was deep in the village, hidden between trees, made from mud bricks and a tin roof that was so low the blazing sun was literally cooking us below it. The humidity was not too bad but, we still felt like we were being cooked on a rotisserie. The building was unfinished, the back wall was only partly completed and there were no windows yet installed, (but there was NO BREEZE ALSO), and because it was too small accommodate everyone, there were people standing in the hot blazing sun for nearly 4 hours at these windows and at the back past the incomplete section. There were over 300 people crammed (literally) into this church. During preaching, I had to be so very, very careful that I did not accidentally step back onto the little children sitting on the floor all around the pulpit.

BUT, this place is alive spiritually. The worship was of an amazing standard in comparison to many churches we have been to before in Uganda. The singing and praising lifted ones heart up before God. The hunger for God and the Holy Spirit was very evident. The presence of God was tangible. Most had a Bible and a notebook! Wow, that was an eye opener. No wonder God moves in power there.
The church is growing too fast for it to house all the latest converts and so they have planted 9 churches closeby within the last couple of years.
Apart from encouraging the church with an inspirational message, we ministered the prophetic and we praise God because many testified afterwards….”this is from God”, or, “God has spoken this to me before!”. That is God, and personally was very encouraging.
Also over 200 people of all ages, male and female were baptised in the Holy Spirit – Hallelujah, that was so exciting, to hear them worshipping and praising God passionately in new tongues, some with tears of joy freely flowing down their cheeks.
Following the morning service, we ministered to over 25 local pastors and leaders, encouraging them to continue in the ministry, in power and under leadership of the Holy Spirit, expecting and demonstrating miracles.
We cannot wait to return to this area and minister amongst them for a longer period.

This is our Uganda. This is our home. These are our people.

It is Hero’s Day here in Uganda and we were invited to join some Aussie friends at a ‘cook off’ competition in Kampala amongst various local business.

It was a lovely day, pleasant and mild with lots of warm sunshine and delightful people to mingle and talk with. The live jazz music was simply a treat to listen to and enjoy. As the judges were judging (sampling) the food, we the crowd, eagerly watched their every move and listened to their comments and responses and when they had judged each group we were able to also sample some of the cooking and some of the cooking was truly, truly delicious.

Amongst the crowd were some reporters from the various newspapers and magazines and the TV reporters doing their takes amongst the contestants. What caught our eye most was a newspaper reporter who was more interested in how many bottles of beer he could consume without being noticed rather than concentrating on the competition. We followed him after we spotted his hand shooting in between the crammed bodies around the tables and taking the beers off the tables, these beers were reserved for the judges and other officials. He got away with it too, no one else it seemed was aware of what was going on and we did not have the heart to say anything, after all he must have been very thirsty with all his taking of notes for his article. It is to be noted he talked to us and told us his occupation and reason for being there BEFORE the judging took place. However, during the course of the afternoon it did come to our observing eyes NO NOTES were taken but many bottles were hastily consumed.

Some may even use this example as evidence that men cannot multitask, if that is so, at least we men can say we persist at the task we”re at! He certainly was persistent at his task.

It will be make very interesting reading in ‘THE CITIZENS newspapers report next week, I cannot wait to read it.

This is our Uganda, these are our people, this is our home.

Saturday, June 4 – it was with much sorrow and regret we had to leave Buliisa and Marita and the Amari school and return to Kampala for more ministry activities on sunday. Our very early planned start did not eventuate due to a case of sleeping in. How one can sleep in after a week off and basically doing nothing much is amazing!!!…so, after a breakfast of chapatis we set off along the road that runs along the edge of the Bungungu Game Reserve. Baboons were everywhere, nothing it seemed other than Baboons, Baboons and MORE Baboons, we have never seen so many Baboons as this on our previous trips to Buliisa/Murchinson Falls National Park, it really was an amazing sight. We even encountered more of them far beyond the borders where they naturally habitate.
On the way between Biso and Masindi is sugar cane country and being the driver for the day I practised a recently acquired new skill, overtaking the huge cane trucks on their inside. The drivers generally drive in the middle of the road, move over for no one, proceed at a pace even snails could keep up with, have NO mirrors AT ALL and allow no one to pass. I discovered if one goes down the inside and closes the eyes ‘in case’ – it works out ok – well, so far it has.
Not too far from home some Vervet monkeys decided to copy our Aussie kangaroos and cross directly in front of the fast moving vehicle at the inappropriate time – with a bit of deft braking, sliding and acceleration a major disaster was averted.
It was a fabulous week spent with my adorable wife celebrating our 30 years of marriage together in a part of the lovely, beautiful land of Uganda. I am grateful Christ has called us to this land to minister Him to this part of the world.
Thank You Jesus, for
Life and forgiveness.
A wife and a family.
A new home and new ministry field.
An opportunity to visit and appreciate another part of Your creation – the land of Uganda.

Friday, June 3 – it was such a gorgeous day here, it was mild to warm with a bit of humidity and a gentle breeze wafting its way across the flat lands of Buliisa. We, that is Shirley, Marita and myself, made a decision to go to the Nile Safari Lodge for the day, for lunch and a swim. We would much prefer to swim in the Nile but with the odd crocodile or two, (actually there a hundreds of those huge predatory beasts lurking anywhere on or beside or in close proximity to any swimmable part of that river) always in search of a tasty free meal we had no choice other than to select the NSL pool. It also did not escape our notice that there were NO OTHER pools available for at least 100 kilometres in any direction we would care to go in, so given our vast range of options we chose this the closest one.
Lunch was fabulous, the views looking up and down the Albert Nile were fantastic, the service of the NSL staff was first class.
After lunch we retired back to the pool for more enjoyment there only to be joined by heaps of Vervet Monkeys. I went and sat in the midst of them with my camera, there were about 30 in all, and they were not frightened at the close attention or the sounds of the camera. They sauntered past me as I sat on the grass photographing them as they chose, chased each other about, climbed in and out of the trees, in short, they just did the things monkeys do….monkeyed about. How strange!
Butterflies were everywhere! The amounts and the different types with all their different colours and shading was pretty spectacular. Also had the pleasure of photographing a chameleon crossing the road on the way to the Lodge.
We had the pleasure of being joined at the poolside by the owner of Red Chilli Hideaway, the largest backpacking caterer in Uganda, www.redchillihideaway.com – it made for a lovely afternoon.

I cannot wait to return again to this most beautiful and delightful peice of Uganda.

Wednesday and Thursday, June 1-2 – Had a couple of lazy days here, laying under a tree with a book, or taking a few photos as opportunities presented themselves and other idle time wasting activities. A bit about our accomodation, we are staying with Marita, a fellow Aussie here in Buliisa. Marita is the founder of Amari Community Development Centre, www.amari.org.au, and she is building a primary school there – so the children (nursery only for this year) are in one room and the living quarters and office and kitchen etc are in the other room. There are a few other co-inhabitants as well, a Ugandan couple in another small side room, but in our room, as well as ourselves and Marita there are 2 lovely dogs, a few bats, frogs, gecko’s, lizards and of course – the mosquitoes. We all live comfortably together (coff coff) enjoying chapatis for breakfast, and for lunch, chapatis with beans, and for supper – guess what????

I have also been teaching Dan, an employee of Marita how to drive on some of the days we have been there, on this trip and previous ones and he is doing very well. On impulse, I casually asked a couple of female teachers would they like to have a try……..of course they answered yes. (Actually, I do believe it is a safety issue for everyone – everyone should be able to have some basic driving skills in cases of emergencies – Buliisa is 320 kilometres from Kampala – or a good 6 hours drive on the difficult roads for experienced drivers). Anyway, the 2 teachers enjoyed their opportunity and I discovered a few more grey hairs much to my chagrin!!!
Another couple of highlights of these days were the enjoying (coff coff) the fragrant odours of the outside pit toilets when was obliged to visit and secondly, showering under the open sky, especially at night. Most nights the sky is clear with the odd occasional burst of lightning far off in the distance. The clear nights without any moon allowed us to look up and see the brilliance of the heavenlies and the shimmering reflection of the Milky Way in all its splendour and glory. The shower block has no roof, no permanent door, no running water, no sink, no bath and no shower. One gets a jerry can of water, tips it in a basin and goes from there. There is a curtain made from reeds but it continually has a mind of its own and decides to fall down at some most inappropriate times despite all the ingenious attempts to make it secure.

I really dont understand why more people dont want more adventures like these in conditions like these!!!

Have also had some great times trying to teach some of the local boys a thing or two about Aussie Rules, one young boy is actually quite good, he can kick, mark and hand pass with a great deal of accuracy but just cannot work out how to run and bounce the ball at the same time. The other boys have just plainly given up and resorted to using it as a soccer ball.

Painted a blackboard on a concrete wall today too.

Tuesday, May 31 – today we went to a small fishing village called Wanseko. There are no fish in the lake around about here because it has all been fished out, so the boats are now going further and further away to catch fish. Wanseko’s attraction is it is the place for the lake ferry to call in daily and take passengers and vehicles to and from places around the Lake. While walking around the village we were able to appreciate the huge mountains of the Congo as a backdrop against the valley of Lake Albert and the Albert Nile. Everything is so green here, the mountain slopes are green, the river banks are green, the wetlands are green and the plains are green, it was so beautiful to see and enjoy.
The local Chairman of the town came to greet us and give us a guided tour of the village. He was very warm in his manners with us, asked for no money (bribe), encouraged us to help his people and blessed us as we left. (If only more East Africans could be like him).
We went to the local market to buy some supplies for the family we are staying with – beans and meat. The beans are measured by the cup and the price is ALWAYS negotiable, the meat is just hung up in the sun with flies resting on the carcass and when some is purchased the amount is hacked off with a large machete and weighed, the the balance of the carcass is rehung up in the sun and given back to the flies until the next purchase. Gizzards and offal are also sold as well – to those who cannot afford the price of regular meat.

Monday, May 30 – today we celebrated our 30th wedding anniversary by going to the Nile Safari Lodge for dinner. It is a trip of about 35 kilometres from Buliisa, along roads that so well maintained (ok, I am kidding, they are not maintained at all). The corrugation effect of the dirt roads (sometimes barely tracks) make for a longer journey and one can arrive feeling like a malted milkshake emerging from the blender, but the scenery is simply picturesque and the villagers are very friendly. While taking our time and enjoying the journey we missed the turn off and became lost but we finally reached our destination via a rather circuitous route.
The resort is a beautiful place. It overlooks the Albert Nile – (the Nile has left Lake Albert and is continuing its journey towards Egypt). From the resorts vantage point we look across the Albert Nile to see Elephants grazing quietly at the waters edge at dusk. Hippos can be seen both in the water and on the banks enjoying the soft sweet grasses, and occasionally a dispute over territory erupts with a ‘much display about nothing’, all posturing and noise, but it is exciting to watch. Sometimes the huge crocodiles can been seen keeping their distances from the hippos. Many varieties of bird life, lizards, butterflies and other animals can be seen there as well, last time we saw a Shoebill close up.
We had a delightful candlelight dinner as the sun darkened its setting and the stars came out to twinkle and dance for us. It was a clear, mild, cloudless evening and the brilliance of the Milky Way shone above us punctuated by the odd ‘falling star or two’. Again, our God can only be admired and adored for the beauty He has woven into His creation for His children to appreciate and enjoy.
The journey home was was relatively uneventful, apart from the corrugations of the road, the odd Owl and Kite flying past, cows and goats sleeping on the road and in rather reluctant moods to move and allow us to pass all was peaceful until we were unable to find the home where we were staying. After some searching our destination was reached and sweetly we both slept the night away contented and happy, in preparation for the next 30 years.

On sunday, May 29, we travelled from Kampala to Buliisa, which is situated on the edge of Lake Albert, just a few kilometres away from the North Western Ugandan border with the Congo to spend a week in the area celebrating our 30th wedding anniversary. Some 50 kilometres past Masindi we drove down the steep escarpment which commands a magnificent view of Lake Albert and the mountains of Eastern Congo. From the bottom of the escarpment to Buliisa we drove along the edge of the Bungugu Game Reserve which abuts the Murchison Falls Game Park Reserve and we saw herds of Uganda Cob, many baboons including mothers with new-born babies clinging to them, some in trees, some sitting in the middle of the road unafraid of people, and others just drifting along in the bushes. Also there was an abundance of Warthogs, Colobus monkeys and a great variety of birds, some we have never seen before. It was a great opportunity for taking many photos, both of the scenery and the animals, and appreciating the beauty, diversity and creative genius of our God and and Father.
